Simma Soupery & Bakery is the brainchild of Dean Kirkland. As a lover of good hearty Jamaican soups and a maker of same, he realised that the overall ability to get a variety of soups was lacking on the Kingston food scene.

The regular choice was always red peas and chicken, and a few others by chance. Simma hoped to provide a wide selection on a daily basis by serving seven freshly prepared soups, in order to give the consumer choices.

Simma Soupery & Bakery opened its doors in August 2016 and has been growing ever since. The establishment offers very affordable lunch and dinner options to suit all budgets and tastes. Indeed, patrons, can combine any of their 4 S’s (Soup, Salad, Sandwich and Sweet) to have a satisfying meal, be it something quick and light or a hearty fill-your-belly meal.

The selection of soups includes chicken gumbo, cow skin and broad bean, along with vegetarian options of bean and veggie corn. Further to these is Manish Mondays, where manish water is on the menu, and Soup of the Day Fridays, which could be anything under the sun.

As an accompaniment to the soups, sandwiches and salads are also available. All items are prepared in-house and with local ingredients where available.

The selection of sandwiches available includes the Coconut Chicken Sandwich with a Coconut Cilantro Pesto, the Pimento Beef Brisket with Homemade Pickles and a Pulled Pork Sandwich made with the establishment’s own ciabatta bun, which is a crowd favourite. Not to be forgotten is the vegetarian option: the Caprese Sandwich that has tomatoes, mozzarella and a basil pesto.

Hearty soups require a hearty salad — Mediterranean, bean, quinoa with black bean salads are all satisfying choices to round off a meal or have on their own. Of course, they are all freshly prepared in-house from scratch; no cans for Simma!!

All good meals need a climax and with that in mind, sweet treats are included. The homemade cookies include the Choco Coco, the Pb&J (Strawberry & Guava) and the popular Pistachio Cran, which are all quick grab-and-go sweet treats. For those who want a little more, there are Pie Holes, which are smaller versions of key lime, chocolate, banana cream, and coconut cream, and the Simma signature bread pudding.

Simma Soupery & Bakery is located in Welcome Plaza in Liguanea and is currently open from Monday to Saturday 11:00 am to 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Fridays.
