We made this product because… it complemented our invention, the Sorrel Harvesting Machine, the first machine in the world, USA-patented, that can strip sorrel. While developing the machine we started to accumulate the by-product sorrel and were drying it for long-life storage. We soon realised it was an excellent opportunity to earn revenue for the company and in turn, an opportunity to fill an untapped area in the local market. Also, sorrel is a traditional Jamaican beverage that should be able to be accessed not only at Christmas but all year round.

Turner’s Choice Candied Sorrel offers … a healthier option snack. The 28g (2oz) candied sorrel is ready to eat. The all-natural fresh sorrel with just enough sugar to tickle the taste buds can be used to add colour and flavour to salads. It’s also perfect for baking cookies or bread.

Our major challenge is… educating farmers about the market and world demand for the product, encouraging them to grow more, and educating people about the major health benefits. Sorrel is 80% more potent in nutritional value than the popular cranberry; it is full of antioxidants and is documented for its cancer-fighting properties. It is also a diuretic and is used to significantly reduce blood pressure if used properly.

This issue remains… but managing the raw material inventory is easier because we use a drying method to enable longer storage life.

The product became available to the public in… 2016.

The products are available at... Loshusan, Shoppers Fair, Lee’s, Craft Cottage and Things Jamaican at Norman Manley Airport and Devon House.

The response to the products has been… amazing! Everyone loves it! The sorrel is especially liked by people who travel, and the candied sorrel is loved by children, adults and even those who don’t like sorrel!

Our core customers are… everyone who loves sorrel, people looking for a healthy option and people who have health issues like high blood pressure and diabetes.

We plan to grow the business to become… a leader in sorrel products worldwide.

Our first breakthrough came… when we invented the machine and ended up with a lot of sorrel on the dining table from testing the machine.

Jamaicans should support the product because… this is a traditional, well-known and loved product. It’s a veritable cash cow and, coupled with our invention, will make us wealthier as a country and leaders in world trade. It’s healthy and, finally, it tastes so good!

The product is successful because… we take great care in handling the raw material, we listen to our customers and respond to everything they say to become better all the time.

If I knew then what I know now… I would not change a thing!

I’m living an amazing dream and loving every step of the journey. Increasing wealth and prosperity for all, creating employment, showing the world the best comes from our amazing little island.
